Yanying Rong
Yanying Rong (She/her) is a graduate intern currently pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at NC State University. She also holds a dual bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Translation & Interpretation from South China Normal University.
Growing up in China, Yanying experienced a highly exam-oriented education system where success was only measured by exam scores. Life felt like it was constantly on a fast-forward loop, leaving hardly any time to process emotions or simply rest. She felt that her struggles went unnoticed when she was trying to talk to her parents, who reminded her that studying was the most “relaxing” thing to do compared to earning money. As she navigated significant life transitions as a freshman in college and later as an international student, she often shared only good news with her family to avoid causing worries, while hesitating to open up to friends due to concerns about burdening others, being misunderstood, or disrupting relationships. Yet, when talking to her friends, she discovered that they all shared similar feelings of stress and isolation, each trying to manage on their own despite feeling overwhelmed. Through her own therapy, Yanying came to understand how powerful simple validation can be, which inspired her own approaches as a counselor-in-training.
Adopting a client centered approach, Yanying aims to create a therapeutic space where each client feels heard, understood, and supported. She works collaboratively with clients to identify their goals, explore possibilities, and build strategies that reflect their unique needs and lived experiences. While she draws on evidence-based techniques as appropriate, she tailors her approach to each client’s preferences and strengths. As a graduate intern, she is committed to continuous learning and growth to better support those she works with.
Yanying offers counseling in English and Mandarin Chinese. She works primarily with international students, college students, and young adults navigating life transitions, anxiety, and other stress-related concerns.
