Emerald Sanoguel
Emerald Sanoguel (she/they) is an intern who is a two time alumni of the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG). At UNCG, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a Masters of Education in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education. Emerald is currently pursuing a Masters of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through North Carolina State University. As a counselor-in-training, they bring their experience working in community college and university academic advising settings, where they have supported students through major and career exploration, developing academic and career plans, and navigating life transitions. Grounded in a holistic approach, Emerald strives to work with her students and clients with empathy, understanding, and compassion
Raised in a Puerto Rican and military family, Emerald grew up around diverse cultures and people, immersed in both the Marine Corps culture and her Puerto Rican heritage. She seeks to celebrate cultural diversity and understand people's lived experiences. Having lived in environments where miscommunication was the norm and open communication, deeper connection, and mutual understanding were lacking, Emerald has grown to be empathic and observant of the people around her. Guided by the belief that everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and respected, she was drawn to the counseling field and aims to empower clients to seek out positive experiences and connections that allow for personal growth.
Emerald utilizes a person-centered approach and believes her clients are the experts of their lives. She aims to empower them to feel more comfortable and confident to achieve their goals and to make decisions that allow for positive change. Centered on clients’ needs and goals, she integrates a variety of therapeutic approaches and techniques, including Feminist theories, strengths-based approaches, CBT, and Gestalt therapy. Emerald encourages mutual collaboration with the client and actively seeks feedback from the client for continuous improvement.
Emerald is open to working with all populations and folxs of various identities, regardless of ability/disability, cultural/ethnic/racial background, religious identity, political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, or citizenship/immigration status. As a clinician, Emerald works with individuals who may be experiencing a variety of concerns involving life changes, anxiety, stress, and depression. She addresses concerns around family of origin, career and academic transitions, and relationship and communication conflicts.
